Since its invention by Dr. James Naismith back in 1891, the game of basketball has been one of the most popular sports in America. A few years later, in the beginning of the 20th century, the National Collegiate Athletic Association was formed in Chicago in 1906. There are 336 universities and colleges that participate in the Division I Men’s Basketball. Forty-nine states, including the District of Columbia, has a school that has a Division I Basketball Program. Alaska temporarily is the only state that doesn’t participate with the NCAA.

Television broadcasts has help the popularity of the sport to skyrocket. One of the most watched annual programs on television is called “March Madness” which shows the collegiate teams competing to win the championship. Nearly a million people watch the NCAA games in person. CBS has achieved more than 14 million streams of their “March Madness Initiative” on the Internet. In 2007’s NCAA Men’s Basketball Tournament, from Saturday, March 31st, Florida beat Ohio with a score of 84-75. In 2006’s NCAA Basketball Tournament, Florida beat UCLA 73-57. Duke University has the one of the most prolific team to play in the NCAA Men’s basketball: The Blue Devils. The team’s rivalry with North Carolina is almost as infamous. They are ranked second in America only to UCLA in total weeks ranked as the best team with a grand total of 110 weeks. Duke has an equally formidable Women’s Division I basketball team also called the Blue Devils. In 2007, the Women’s Division I Basket ball, Tennessee beat Rutgers 59-46. The NCAA Women’s Division I was incorporated in 1981-82 season. This tournament is held every April. In 2003, television stations had placed the broadcasts for the Women’s Tournament after the Men completed their Division I championship game. Since they are right after the men’s game, the women are also part of the “March Madness” celebration. In 1983, the first NCAA Women’s Division I Tournament was played in Norfolk, Virginia. Tennessee, Maryland, Cheney and Louisiana Tech were in the final four. Women have played in the sport of basketball since it’s creation in the 1890s. In 1892, an educator at Smith College named Senda Berenson incorporated the game into her physical education class for her female pupils. Other colleges encouraged basketball teams for women students to play in. On March 21, 1893, Miss Berenson’s students played in the first Women’s collegiate basketball tournament. In 1895, during the last five years before the 20th century, Women collegiate basketball teams spread across the country. The game continues to be extremely popular with both men and women over the past century.
